One of the cheapest ways to start a blog and having a self-hosted name is to use Bluehost. It is a hosting site that offers you a complete package of all you need to start up and run your blog. Bluehost comes with:
- A free domain
- Easy WordPress installation
- 24/7 support
To have a blog is one of the best things you can imagine, it takes a lot of work, but pay off is amazing. Blogging is a tool to use for yourself and others. There are all sorts of blogs around, blogs about baking, being a mom, photography, travelling, and of course blogs about blogging. I pretty much read all of these types, but my favorites are those about other people’s experiences with blogging, because you can learn so much from their stories.
It doesn’t really matter what you want your blog to be about, because there are always ways to make it worthwhile to you. And on top of that, every type of blog can make an income, whether it’s through ads or through affiliate links.
Do you want to explore these ways to make money online, then you will need a self-hosted blog. Self-hosted means that the blogging platform doesn’t place its name behind yours to form your full website name. For example this blog is fudgemylife.org and not fudgemylife.wordpress.org. Bluehost is the best place to set up your self-hosted website. It allows you to monetize your blog in any way you want. And because it allows you to make money from your blog, you will earn back the few bucks that it costs in no time.
Step 1: Choose Your (Domain) Name
Click on the green “get started now” button.
Deciding on the name of your blog is one of the hardest things to do. But the most important thing is that it doesn’t really matter what the name is exactly, there are a few other things though to take into account.
- Make sure your name is easy to spell and easy to remember. This might be your actual name, or a phrase or combination of words that are relatively easy to spell. This makes sure that people will remember you name and will be able to find it back.
- Try to relate it to your topic, but keep it general. Don’t use a name that is completely unrelated, or is even related to some other topic. And at the same time, don’t keep it too narrow, or you won’t be able to grow.
- Just keep trying out names. A lot of names are already taken, so you will have to try a few times. Pick a name that ends on .com or .org, because it seems more professional, and they occur most frequently.
You can test your name here:
After you have chosen a name for your blog, you continue in Bluehost and decide on your hosting plan. It offers three hosting plans, but to start out, the basic plan will be more than enough. When you choose to sign up for the basic plan, you will get a free domain name. The best thing about Bluehost is that everything you need for your new blog is included in your hosting plan. On top of that, if you would like to add an option later on, you can always upgrade your hosting package.
Choose the ‘basic’ plan.
After you have decided on the hosting plan you want, you will get the following screen. There you have to fill in your chosen domain name on the left and click on ‘next’.
Step 2: Buy Your Hosting
In the next step they will ask for your account information, hosting package information and also for your payment information. First you fill out all your personal details under account information and move on to the package information. In the area of the package information you will see that Bluehost has already ticked certain options. To start out, I suggest to only leave the “Domain Privacy Protection” box ticked. The other options are not really necessary for beginners, and will only cost you more. To get more information about each options you can always click on the “More information” boxes under each option.
Most of the time, Bluehost has special price offers, which may be shown on this page too. Then you can even get a hosting plan for as little as $2,95 a month.
Step 3: Install WordPress
Once you’ve paid for you hosting plan, you can open your dashboard. There are a lot of different options here, but your priority will be to install WordPress to set up your blog.
When you have selected WordPress, you will have to press an “Install” button and choose to which domain name you want it linked. This will be your domain name that you have chosen a few steps ago.
After this, you are done. You have successfully set up your blog.
