7 Tips on How to Choose Your Blog Name
Coming up with a good blog name is one of the more tricky things to do when you’re about to set up your blog. It will make you worry when you can’t think of something good. And will make feel really disappointed when your perfect blog name that you’ve come up with is already taken. I struggled with the same issues while I was trying to find a domain name for my blog. Luckily I did come up with something reasonably okay on a whim. It was actually while I was testing the availability of my other blog name ideas that I came up with FudgeMyLife.org. So, I thought it would be helpful to give you some tips on finding your perfect blog name. There are 7 important things you need to keep in mind, and I included an extra bonus tip at the end, just for you.

1. Don’t Use Hyphens or Numbers
When you choose your domain name, it is best to stick to normal letters. Don’t use any other weird characters like hyphens or numbers, or any characters that are formed by pressing multiple keys on your keyboard. Because no one likes doing that. On top of that, words or combinations of words are easier to remember than numbers. And hyphens can only confuse. It is also much more difficult to create a brand image around something that includes hyphens. So stick to plain old letters to get the job done.
2. Make It Easy to Read
To make sure that people can remember you name, you also need to make it easy to read. Make sure that there are no weird sequences of letters that could be read wrong. A great tip is to avoid long words altogether, because they won’t make it easy to remember or easy to type. You have to remember that you want a name that people can type in easily and without mistakes. So long words or words with tricky spelling are better left out of your blog name.
On top of avoiding longer words, it is also known that shorter blog names, generally speaking, are better blog names. Apparently around 6 characters is the perfect amount for a website name. Obviously I didn’t adhere to that rule, because another way to come up with a name is to use well known expressions. My domain name is clearly based on a well known expression, and that makes it easier to remember.
So either go for a short and easy name. Or choose something that is easy to remember and easy to spell. And don’t forget to check whether your name doesn’t include other words that you didn’t mean. I see this quite often, that I just read a blog name wrong. And I feel bad about it, but sometimes it’s just funny as well. So try to think as a adolescent teen when you check your name for any unfortunate letter combinations.
3. Use .com When You Can
To really make your blog name sound professional, you should try and find a domain name that ends in .com. This is not always possible, but preferred. It is the most commonly used domain type, and what you think of when you have to type in a website’s name. If you are really set on a specific name, but .com is already taken. Then I would suggest using .net or .org. But don’t use some of the other suggestions domain name checking websites sometimes make.
4. Use Keywords
If you have read about SEO, then you know that keywords are crucial in the blogging world. And a great way to start of on the right foot, is by including a strong keyword in your blog name. You can really take advantage of this when you know beforehand what your blog is going to be about. I wasn’t really sure what I was going to focus on, so I didn’t use any keywords at all. Because using a keyword from another niche is worse than using no keywords at all. A great way to find keywords is by going to Pinterest and looking at what other people use as keywords for the types of blog posts/pins that you want to write about.
5. Be Memorable
Try to come up with something that people will remember. Think of words or phrases that you think of when you brainstorm about yourself, or your topic. This was for me really important in choosing my blog name. I wanted something that people would find easy to remember, yet something that also reflected me. And FudgeMyLife.org describes that perfectly (at least I think so).
So think of names and words that relate to you and your topic, if you have decided on one. And try to come up with a phrase that is easy to read, easy to say, and most importantly: easy to remember.

If you can’t think of any name, then maybe you should consider using your own name. You have to be careful with this and keep to the rules stated above all the same. If your name is not easy to read and easy to say, then don’t use it.

6. Google Your Blog Name
Once you have found the perfect, you should take a look around the internet before purchasing it. You want to make sure that the name isn’t already used by some company, because then you could run into problems concerning trademarks etc. So do a google search on your chosen name. And you should also run it through some social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. This will make sure that you can set up your own social media accounts with your own blog name once you start blogging.
7. Act Fast
Once you have chosen your name, you need to purchase it right away. Because it might not be there anymore tomorrow. Don’t forget that there are many people starting up blogs nowadays. And that there are companies, who purchase wanted names, just to sell them on again. So if you have found a name that you want to use, and that is free, you need to purchase that domain yourself straight away.
