1. Create or Convert to a Pinterest Business Account
If you haven’t done this already, then this should be your first step. You can either set up a completely new Pinterest business account, or you can convert the one you may already have. The benefits of a Pinterest business account are that you can use Pinterest Analytics to keep track of all your pins, boards and the amount of people you reach in total. On top of that it makes it possible for you to use promoted pins, the ad system on Pinterest, if you’d want to. The steps you need to take can be done quickly and easily. A business account also means that you can link your website to your account and verify it as yours. This means that your Pinterest Analytics will include information about everything that is pinned from your blog or website. You can click here to convert your Pinterest account.
2. Apply for Rich Pins
This is a second vital thing to do for your Pinterest page. Applying for rich pins means that you ask Pinterest to make your pins ‘rich’. What this means is that your pins will appear with a bold heading beneath them, instead of normal text. On top of that the pin will show the source (your blog), the pinner and sometimes it will show the date that it was saved. All of this information makes your pins look more professional, and easier to navigate through. Rich pins also improve your ranking within Pinterest, because it contains more information. And that’s something that Pinterest likes. You can never forget that Pinterest works a bit like a search engine, such as Google or Yahoo!. The easiest way to apply for rich pins is to use the Yoast Plugin. If you need more help with this, you can click here.
3. Optimize Your Name, Bio and Picture
This is the part, where SEO comes in. SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization, and helps you to make sure that your content contains the right keywords at the right places. SEO is not only important in your writing of you blog posts, but also in the promotion of them. To optimize your blog posts you should use the Yoast Plugin. But to optimize your Pinterest Profile you can’t use a plugin. The best way to optimize your Pinterest account is to first find some popular keywords that are relevant to your niche, you can find them by using the pinterest search bar, or by taking a look at other people’s profiles within your niche. Then you should use the keywords to create your Bio, which is the description of your Pinterest Profile.
You should also include 1 to 3 keywords in your Profile Name. You can do this by adding them after you name, the most common way to separate your name from your keywords is to use a vertical line. After you have done this, you should choose a picture or logo to display as your profile picture. If you have a great head shot, you can use that. But if you don’t (like me, who also doesn’t have a great head in general), you can stick to your logo. The most important thing, is to choose a picture that stands out and that is easy to recognize.
4. Improve Your Pinterest Profile’s Board Order
The 4th way to improve your Pinterest Profile, is to organize your board order. The first thing you need to do, is to make sure that you have a board that is dedicated to all the pins belonging to your blog. This should always be your first board that people see when they visit your profile. Another important thing, is to organize your boards, so that the most important ones come first. So the boards that are about what you blog about, should be following straight after your ‘blog board’. You can change the order of your boards, by going to your pinterest profile and simply dragging the boards into the order that you want.
Another great feature of a Pinteres Business Account is the ability to create a so called ‘showcase’ of the boards that you want to be featured. This is a type of slide show of your favorite boards that appears above all of your own boards. You can customize it, so it shows those boards that you want. You should always include your own ‘blog board’ and then the boards that you find the most important for your blog.
5. Optimize Your Board Descriptions
Another thing to remember is that pinterest boards also need a description. Again, this description should be SEO optimized, so you can use the same strategy that I explained to improve your profile description. You should also remember that you shouldn’t create boards that have nothing to do with your blog topics. Now if you already have boards like that, you can keep them, but make sure that they are not one of the first boards that people see when the visit your profile. Or you can decide to make those boards secret boards, that way, you can still use them, but others won’t be able to see them.
6. Improve the Amount of Boards and the Amount of Pins on them
A last thing to remember for Pinterest boards is that you need enough of them, and that they need enough pins on them. For example having less than five boards about your chosen topics is not enough, you should aim at about 5 to 10 to begin with. When it comes to the amount of pins that a board should have, to be one of your prominent boards, is around 50 to 100. I strongly discourage to go under 50, but of course, you need to start out with zero. So try to grow new boards quickly. You can always use a scheduling tool such as Tailwind to do this for you.
BONUS: An extra way to improve the coherence of your pinterest profile, is to use board covers. This is an extra tip, but I don’t think it is a necessity. If you have the time for it, you should do it. Otherwise, leave it for later.
